How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
The AAOS has been an anchor in my orthopedic journey. I regularly dive into the online CME programs and educational resources to sharpen my clinical edge and deepen my understanding of evolving best practices. The Publications tab keeps me connected to the latest research and clinical insights, essential when you’re constantly moving between practices and physicians. One of my favorite tools is the Orthopaedic Video Theater. Since I encounter a variety of surgical techniques during my locums work, these videos allow me to stay adaptable, prepared, and a few steps ahead in the OR. The AAOS has truly been my digital mentor, always one click away.
As an Allied member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
The AAOS Orthopaedic Video Theater remains a staple, especially in my role as a locum tenens provider, where surgical styles can vary widely between practices. It’s like having a front-row seat to technique-specific masterclasses anytime I need a refresher or a new perspective. I also regularly tap into the online CME and clinical practice guidelines to keep my knowledge sharp and evidence-based. The clean layout of the Education tab makes targeted learning efficient, especially when I’m on the move. Whether preparing for a new assignment or unwinding after clinic, the AAOS platform gives me tools that fit my dynamic lifestyle.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
During a conversation with Dr. James R. Andrews, he said, “It still all comes down to the history.” That simple reminder stuck with me. When you take the time to truly listen and ask the right questions, the diagnosis often starts to take shape before you ever touch the patient. Those lightbulb moments come from respecting the story behind the symptoms.
Dr. Steven Mirabello also influenced my approach. He emphasized the importance of a focused, efficient physical exam that is clean, accurate, and purposeful.
Between those two pieces of advice, I learned the power of blending thoughtful listening with precise execution. That combination has served me well in every OR, clinic, and sideline I’ve worked in.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Once I’ve learned the basics of the clinic’s EMR system and their expectations, I focus on pre-charting. The day before, I review every patient scheduled, why they’re coming in, and whether they were referred from the ER, primary care, or elsewhere. I also review imaging, labs, and any existing treatment plans. This prep not only boosts my efficiency but also sharpens my clinical thinking. I walk into each encounter ready, not reactive.
Over time, I’ve built a personal notebook. A collection of wisdom and techniques I’ve gathered from the many physicians I’ve worked alongside. It’s become a running log of clinical pearls and different care styles. That constant exposure to diverse methods keeps me growing and adaptable. Patient care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and my system helps me tailor my approach every time.
If the clinic has EPIC, I have my SmartPhrases to increase my efficiency.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
I’m working to consistently slow down and give every patient my full attention, no matter how packed the schedule or chaotic the day. I want everyone to leave my exam room feeling heard, understood, and confident. Maybe it’s the country boy in me, but I believe if someone can explain their condition and options to their neighbor or grandmother, I’ve done my job right. I use plain language, sketch diagrams, and hand out printed instructions whenever possible.
Alongside that, I’ve made it a priority to close every loop by the end of the day, charts finished, messages answered, prescriptions sent. I never want a patient to feel like they slipped through the cracks. It’s a habit rooted in respect, for their time and their trust.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I love reading and writing, especially travel adventures and horror short stories. I’m always working on the next creative project. Exercise keeps me grounded, and when I can pair it with travel, even better. You’ll often find me hiking mountain trails, skiing fresh powder, or exploring the hidden corners of a new city, museums, architecture, and local history.
I also enjoy hunting, watercolor painting, and even the occasional coloring book to slow things down. And when it’s time to unleash my inner child, Universal Studios Orlando never fails. Few things beat the magic and a butterbeer in hand.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Since 2019, I’ve been living out of my truck while working as a locum tenens provider, trading a fixed address for wanderlust and experiences. I have an insatiable drive to explore, learn, and wring every drop out of life. That passion led me to start my own entertainment company, Tommy Ray Entertainment, where I write travel books and horror stories, record original music, and share through my YouTube channel.
Whether it’s on the road, in the OR/clinic, or behind a guitar, I’m always chasing the next story worth telling.
