How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
AAOS became particularly valuable to me during my residency and while preparing for my specialist examination in orthopaedic surgery. Its educational resources and exam questions gave me a structured way to review the entire field, identify gaps in my knowledge, and focus my studying more efficiently. As an International Resident member, I also appreciate the opportunity to compare my training and clinical practice in Switzerland with a broader international perspective.

As an International Resident Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I have mainly used the AAOS self-assessment exams and question-based learning resources, particularly during my preparation for the orthopaedic specialist examination. Learning through questions works very well for me because it immediately shows me what I know and, more importantly, where my knowledge is incomplete. I also find the explanations behind the answers very useful, as they often lead me to review a topic in greater depth. More recently, I have also enjoyed using the Orthopaedic Video Theater to review surgical techniques, particularly in shoulder and elbow surgery.

What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
One of my chiefs used to tell me that to become a good surgeon, you need a lot of operative mileage. There is simply no substitute for experience. But he also taught me that volume alone is not enough. You have to prepare for every case, remain critical of your own work, and keep learning throughout your career.

What’s your go to productivity trick?
I try to start with the most demanding task rather than postponing it. Whether it is studying, preparing for a difficult case, or training, I find that once the hardest part is done, the rest becomes much easier to structure.

What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
I am trying to be a little more consistent with training even during busy periods at work. Making time for sports and being outdoors helps me clear my mind and stay focused at work as well.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I am definitely a mountain person. I spend as much of my free time as possible cycling, skiing, and mountaineering. The Alps have always been a big part of my life and are still the place where I recharge best.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Before studying medicine, I worked as a professional ski instructor and coached ski racers.
