Safety Checklist for Spine Surgery

For over 90 years, aviation has used airplane-specific checklists as a way of creating standard work for teams that have helped make aviation an incredibly safe form of transport that we all take for granted. What would happen if a group of surgeons grabbed the bull by the horns just like the pilots did back in 1939, and created their own procedure-specific checklists and helped each other to use them, learning together? In this webinar, we share the true story of a group of POSNA & SRS surgeons who actually took on this challenge, and made it work, including the use of an electronic checklist “app” that can be used on a phone or up on a screen in the operating room. We share this four-year journey with its ups and downs together to help create an electronic sharable checklist for scoliosis surgery, and to actually use that checklist from the Preop Area to the PACU, every case every time. We will share how such tools could be used in other surgeries as well.
